August roars in with the New Moon in fiery Leo on the 1st. This conjunction of the Sun and the Moon in the sign of self-expression, play and romance tends to open hearts and expand egos. We have an increased need for attention and self-importance. When these are earned with generosity and creativity we are likely to be rewarded with the love we desire; however, if insecurities dominate, Leo time can be a world in which everyone wants to be the star and no one wants to play a supporting role. This can produce drama of an undesirable kind in which the unattractive image of naked ego reveals the inner brat instead of the inner child. The old adage of “the more you give the more you get” has never been truer.
A healthy dose of modesty and restraint enters the picture when loving Venus moves into practical and cautious Virgo on August 6, where it will stay until the 30th. While more sedate behavior is on the way, it’s not going to happen immediately. That’s because assertive Mars opposes wild and crazy Uranus on the 6th, signaling rebellious and risk-taking behavior. Mercury, the planet of rationality, is no help that day since it’s opposing spacey Neptune, so our minds may be out to lunch while our impulses are running wild. However, logical thinking starts to return on August 9 when Mercury aligns in a favorable 120-degree trine with pointed Pluto. Greater care with words and more discipline with details follows thanks to Mercury’s entry into its earthy home sign Virgo on August 10. Similar maturity can be expected in relationship and financial matters as Venus joins restrictive Saturn on August 15.
We get to breathe more freely with the Full Moon in friendly Aquarius on August 16, one of the most socially inviting astrological events each year. Romantic fantasy and inappropriate substance abuse, though, can spoil the party if escapist Neptune’s opposition to the Full Moon gets out of hand. The potential for a day of great joy and even greater indulgence is heightened as Venus trines expansive Jupiter. But if you go too far, consequences may be faced on the 17th when a hard-nosed square between Mars and Pluto signals high levels of accountability and limited capacity for forgiveness. Fortunately, a trine between chatty Mercury and generous Jupiter provides extra intelligence to handle what could be a dicey situation. The Sun’s entry into Virgo on August 22 marks the last month of summer (or winter, south of the equator) and thoughts of returning to normal routine. But on the 23rd, Mercury and Venus oppose disruptive Uranus to spring surprises. Weird ideas, strange conversations and sudden changes of heart provoke feelings of instability. Staying flexible and open-minded are good ways to keep a little shaking from turning into a major breakdown. Still, stirring the pot can force a reexamination of desires and expectations from others. Mercury makes a tense 90-degree square with penetrating Pluto on the 27th and Venus does the same on the 29th, perhaps forcing a showdown on these matters.
